We caught up with Lucy Henderson, Senior Interior Designer at My Bespoke Room (who has also designed her own beautiful home!) to find out a little more about this award-winning company. Tell us about your love for interiors – when did it all begin? What does a typical day involve in your role as Senior Designer at My Bespoke Room?
When I was a young girl and growing up, I was always moving the furniture around in my bedroom (much to my parents’ dismay) and spent my pocket money on stencil kits, candle holders and photo frames for my bedroom! Art was always my favourite subject at school and I remember studying William Morris and visiting a stately home to see some of his hand-painted wallpaper. I loved to trace his designs and adapt them by creating my own patterns and colour palettes. I’ve always had a passion and interest in design and so naturally this led me to a career in interiors.
It’s a cliché but no two days are the same as Senior Interior Designer at My Bespoke Room! My day usually starts by catching up with the team, talking to and supporting all our wonderful designers. I read through all our briefs and accurately pair our customers with the right designer for their project based on their style and preferences. I also oversee and approve all our room designs before they go out.
It’s important to keep up to date on trends and any new collections / products from our suppliers, and I am always on the look out for new retailers we may be able to work with. We give each customer their own unique and bespoke look from across multiple retailers, and so my little black book is continually evolving! I am also lucky enough to be able to work on some fabulous room designs myself which is where I’m at my happiest!

Talk us through the concept for My Bespoke Room – what is the process when a customer first contacts you?
What makes My Bespoke Room unique is the idea that hiring an interior designer shouldn’t break the bank. For as little as £95, the site gives customers access to a dedicated professional designer who will produce a unique, bespoke room design based on individual tastes and style preferences, all completed in a hassle-free online environment, with a fast turnaround.
Once a customer has submitted their online brief, I pair them with one of our friendly designers, who then gets in touch to arrange a phone call. This is a chance for us to dig a little deeper into the customer’s design preferences, get to know them, and what they want and need from their space. The next stage is then agreeing on the design direction for their room which is a collaborative and fun process. Once the design direction and room layout is agreed, the designer can then move forward and pull together the full room design which comes with a mood board, a 2D visual, a layout plan, their own interactive shopping list, as well as styling tips and recommendations!
It must be difficult to finalise the room design, how do you decide on a scheme? How much input does the customer have?
Our aim is that every customer ends up with a room design styled in a way that exceeds what they could ever conjure up on their own. We have developed an amazing design journey which is a fun collaborative process between the customer and the designer.
During the brief stage, we ask our clients to provide any inspirational images they have seen and loved (such as their Pinterest boards, Houzz photos or any magazine clippings). This information, as well as insight gathered during the call, is the first step in gaining an understanding of the customer’s needs, their preferred styles and colour combinations (and sometimes, more importantly, what they don’t like!) The designer also shares some additional inspirational images with the customer and asks them to comment on the pictures with their likes and dislikes. At every stage of the design process, the customer is very much involved, and we always agree on a design direction and preferred layout before we move forward with the final design process.
Do you have a favourite room that you like to design? Where does your inspiration for each room stem from?
I love designing small spaces. I always enjoy the challenge of making the most out of a space and I feel that smaller rooms can often be where you can have the most fun! I also love designing children’s bedrooms; there are so many possibilities, and I find it really exciting designing a space which can grow and evolve with the child.
My design inspiration comes from so many places, it could be a piece of artwork, a vintage piece of furniture a customer may have, the style of the property, or simply a colour palette or pattern that inspires me or the client. Each project is different, and inspiration stems from the initial conversation I have with my client by getting to know them, their likes and dislikes, and the aspirations they have for their room.
If you can choose, do you have a favourite room that you’ve designed at My Bespoke Room so far?
That’s a tough one as there are quite a few to choose from!
I recently designed two children’s bedrooms for a brother and sister in a beautiful period property. For the little girl’s room, we went with turquoise and blush with pops of gold accessories which just look amazing together. For the boy’s room, we designed a feature Hague Blue wall with a large world map and a pop of stylish superhero artwork, as well as a fun tepee. I am currently working on an eclectic and luxurious “adult” living room where the customer can escape in the evening after a busy day at work and looking after their baby. A deep blue velvet sofa with pops of blush and lots of textures and pattern are going to make this room an amazing place to relax with a glass of wine and a film, or a cuppa and a good book … every design is so different, and all are really fun and exciting to work on. It never gets boring!
Tell us about some of your favourite interior trends at the moment – which ones do you see staying put for the foreseeable future?
I personally love the indoor plant trend as it’s a really inexpensive way to transform a space by adding some life, colour and texture. A large leafy plant adds punch to a lifeless corner and can really complete a room. I also love working with different textures and love all the tassel and pom pom baskets, cushions and throws which are in the shops right now. By mixing textures you can instantly create another layer of interest within a room.
Brass is a firm favourite of mine and is going nowhere! It’s a sophisticated finish and can add real warmth and elegance to a room. I love the combination of brass with rich velvets. A pop of brass against a darker paint colour such as Farrow & Ball Studio Green or Railings can look so dramatic and chic too.
What are the three things you always look to include when you’re designing a room for a customer?
Ultimately the room design has got to work for our client and meet their needs as well as come in within their budget. The devil is in the detail, and so quite often it is the little things that can really pull a room design together such as, cushions, artwork, a feature mirror or rug.
Can you reveal some of your favourite go-to destinations for interiors and home accessories? Do these tend to change from customer to customer?
The pieces we include in each room design vary so much from one design to the other. So much is dependent on style and budget. Luckily, we have spent a lot of time building an amazing black book from well-known high-street retailers to smaller gems including up-and-coming suppliers. We really understand where to go for the best products from the best suppliers, to suit the customer and their bespoke design.
Some of my personal favourite go-to destinations for interiors are Swoon Editions for on-trend and reasonably priced furniture. Anthropologie for the eclectic interior and amazing finishing touches. The Cotswold Co for good quality, stylish, and timeless pieces. Modern Rugs for an amazing selection of rugs that suit a variety of budgets. West Elm has gorgeous accessories, and Pooky is fab for brass light fittings!

Your home is beautiful – and what a transformation! – was it a daunting process? What’s your favourite corner or aspect that you’re most proud of?
Thank you so much, we feel very lucky.
Building a new family home, and digging down on such a small plot was a very daunting process! My husband, who is an Architectural Designer (Dot Architecture), was up for the challenge and we made a good team in bringing the project to life.
I love the feeling when you walk through the front door and you see the vaulted ceiling and huge windows which give a real sense of space. Although the ground floor is completely open plan (apart from a small WC and pantry) it is split into zones through furniture placement, artwork and lighting. Surprisingly, one of my favourite rooms is our tiny WC on the ground floor. I decided to be bold in this small space and chose white marble hexagonal wall tiles, a floral feature wallpaper, quirky enamel basin and brass light fittings. I also love our kitchen/dining space which we spend a lot of time in as a family.
How has the process of creating your own home influenced how you now design a customer’s home?
Together with my husband, we have spent years refurbishing properties, extending them, and most recently building our own from scratch. Having gone through these experiences, I can connect with customers on a personal level and understand their challenges, and work with them to achieve their ideal. I’m able to reassure clients and guide them through the decision-making process which can be so daunting when undertaking home improvements. I always design for the customer taking into consideration their lifestyle and try to understand how they envisage using the space and what they want to achieve.
